Waxing Your Snowboard The Right Way

Written by Don
on July 2nd, 2009

If you have made the decision to buy your own snowboard, you will want to look after it as best you can. Part of looking after a board is giving it a regular waxing. The reason you wax the board is not to increase grip like on surfboards, it’s instead to make the board more slippery and faster on the slopes. When applied, the layer of wax ingrains deep into the board’s base layer. On the slopes the snow actually melts when it comes into contact with the wax on your base so you’re really riding on lots of water-particles. Here is how to wax your board properly

Remove previous coat. Before you put on the new wax, make sure the whole board has been cleaned thoroughly. Find a plastic scraper and careful take off the wax using long smooth movements. You may want to use a hair-dryer to soften the wax and base cleaner which you can get from a snowboards outlet. Avoid using anything metal to do this job however as you risk doing permanent damage to the underside of the board.

Wax on. Find an iron that nobody minds you using and get it to a gentle-wax-melting temperature. Set the iron heat to ‘cotton’ as this is usually the ideal level. When the correct temperature has been reached, drip the wax over the base in lines by holding the wax bar against the iron above the board. Then take the iron and distribute the wax even across the base by using smooth careful movements.

Finishing
. When the wax has had 30 mins to cool down, you need to finish the base. This is done by rubbing down the wax layer with a new cloth and bringing it to a nice shine. Then finally brush over it with a hard-bristled brush and remove and built up areas of wax, before buffing again. Now your ready for a little extreme sports action

Getting Ready – With The Right Ski Clothing

Written by Don
on June 30th, 2009

Now let us just get cracking with this article as the temperatures are rising day by day due to global warming, and the ice in the Arctic is melting away at a rapid speed. So if this article it finished before then maybe you still stand a chance of having maybe a few more ski trips in Montreal or the Swiss Alps that you can attend.

If you are deciding to go on a skiing expedition, your most important gear would be your ski clothing. Not only the boots that keep your toes warm and snug while on the ice cold snow, preventing any prolonged contact which could land up turning into gangrene, and therefore maybe having your toes amputated if not your feet altogether. Since your ski clothing is the only thing that keeps you alive at such low temperatures, it is important that all ski clothing be made of materials that are water proof, insulate, warm and protect the person wearing them. Ski clothing may seem way too bulky for some, but there is a real valid reason for it.

Shopping Out Of Ski Season For Ski Clothing

You can on the odd occasion find the discount ski clothing when the season is not around, but that would not be the normal time to buy any form of ski clothing, but when the season for skiing is around. Yes you get a itch that you wish to scratch and its name is to go skiing, and you want to do it now, well in the summer months it may not be advisable to go skiing in the Alps or in Montreal for that matter, you will just have to wait the summer season out again. And just maybe if you are so persistent that you just have to go skiing once in your life, you may look for those bargains around while you can, getting ready to brace yourself and all your ski clothing for the next bout of snow that falls.

Sometimes you can get some good second hand ski clothing, but make sure they are still in absolute good condition, and if there are any tears on them, make sure they are repaired before you go on your expedition.

Additional Coverage For Ski Clothing

The thermal underwear as part of your ski clothing is also vital, as this protects you even more from the harsh temperatures of the snow. And your glasses are extremely important as the reflection of light on the snow could blind or damage your eyes, besides protecting them from the air and wind, and debris that may be in the air.

Brittany’s Music and Dancing Tradition

Written by Don
on February 14th, 2009

Brittany has a vigorous history of popular dancing. The Breton music and its associated Danses Plin, Rondes, Derobes, “Scottishes”, Gavottes and so on are much played and enjoyed by all ages. If you come to Brittany on holidays – maybe staying in one of those traditional gites or longeres (=terraced farm buildings) – you will become aware that there are a lot of local events involving music We have (and let holiday gites in the Vilaine Valley, near La Roche Bernard ).

Not only French residents, we are now also totally addicted. to the folklorique heritage. In my case to an instrument called the bombarde, and my wife to les danses Bretonnes.

Certainly Breton dancing and Brittany’s old culture has revived in recent years, but there was always a very strong base. Up to a very few years ago (and perhaps it still goes on) people were collecting folk music, along the lines of Cecil Sharp in England.

Fest Noz

In the summer there are so many festivals that they could on by themselves form the basis of your holiday in Brittany. July and August (= the French holiday season) has a fest noz (=evening feast) for every day of the week. These are fest noz are mostly for the locals, but people from elsewhere are also made to feel very welcome. You will be well fed at low cost (moules marinieres, beouf gros sel, etc.) along low tables and benches. The music and welcoming atmosphere are great.

Fest deizh

More rarely there are fest deizh (=daytime feasts) which happen in the afternoon and which are often held as “stages” (=training sessions) for would-be Breton dancers. Many people will go to these, and there is often fine singing. Most of the dances have accompanying songs in fact, though the tunes and steps seem to be better remembered than the words.

Noces Bretonnes

Finally there are “noces Bretonnes” (=Brittany weddings) which are re-enactments of aan old fashioned wedding. These can be quite grand: we paid 30 euros each for one such occasion in Augan, Morbihan. It seemed a bit steep, but the meal lasted 4 hours, comprised seven courses, and was served with beer, wine, champagne, cider, and a little bit of Calvados – tout compris. A wonderful day.

The instruments

The music is based on simple band lineups – from a selection of

  • bombardes – a piercingly loud reed instrument, same length and pitch as a penny whistle.
  • Biniou/ cornemuses – the bagpipes that Breton men play
  • accordions
  • flutes
  • clarinets
  • saxophone
  • violin

There will be 3 – 4 players at any one time. The music can be “muddy” and indistinct if dominated by accordions, but its lightened by the other instruments which carry the melody line much better. Its always strongly rhythmic and danceable.

The Dances

The dances were very chaste in the old times. A whole village would dance in rondes where everyone links to everybody else via their little fingers – no other bodily contact. There are many others, including “pile menu” which were danced to beat flat the earth floor of your house – try to imagine that as a dating opportunity. Fortunately for young lovers Brittany has been able to import racier and rather daring dances such as gavottes, and polka – from abroad – and adapt them to local ways of doing things. But these are just some of the Breton traditions that enliven a local Calvados from travelling distilleries and so on.
